Stainless Steel Material Descriptions

Austenitic Grade

303
Free machining stainless. Used in automatic machining operations. High corrosion resistance.
304
304 Most widely used stainless. Good corrosion resistance with good formability and welding.
304L
Low carbon stainless with the same properties as 304 but with superior intergranular corrosion resistance following welding or relieving.
316
Better corrosion resistance and higher strength at elevated temperatures than 304. It also has superior creep strength at elevated temperatures. Used in pumps, valves, chemical equipment, and marine equipment.
316L
Low carbon stainless with the same properties as 316 but with superior intergranular corrosion resistance following welding or relieving.
20 CB3
Highly corrosion resistant alloy. Used in mostly chemical industry.

Ferrite Grade

416
Heat-treatable, free machining stainless used where corrosion is not severe. Resistant against natural food acids, water and basic salts in most atmospheres.

Martensitic Grade

Carpenter
Custom 450
Displays the same corrosion resistance as 304 stainless, with two to three times the yield strength. Can be used heat-treated or non heat-treated.

Precipitation Hardening Grade

17-7 PH
Excellent mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Heat-treatable for high strength properties.
AM 350
Same properties as 17-7PH with slightly higher capabilities at elevated temperatures. Can be used heat-treated or non heat-treated.

Special Metals

Monel 400
High strength and toughness over wide temperature range. Corrosion and oxidation resistance to 1000 degrees F.
Inconel 625
Excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and welding properties. Good for cryogenic to high temperatures up to 2000 degrees F.
Hasteloy C
Used mostly in chemical environments for resistance against oxidizing agents.
